Officers Uncover $4 Million in Drugs During Major South Texas Cocaine Bust

Hidalgo, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge have made a significant drug bust, intercepting a substantial shipment of cocaine valued at $793,005 concealed within a vehicle. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of CBP to combat drug trafficking and enhance border security.

On October 10, the incident unfolded when CBP officers encountered a grey Chevrolet sedan entering the United States from Mexico. The vehicle was selected for a thorough inspection based on standard procedures designed to identify potentially suspicious activity. Utilizing advanced non-intrusive inspection (NII) equipment and a specialized canine team trained to detect narcotics, the officers initiated a comprehensive screening of the vehicle.

During the physical inspection, officers discovered a total of 26 packages containing suspected cocaine, which weighed 59.39 pounds (26.94 kg). The packages were skillfully concealed within the vehicle, demonstrating the lengths to which traffickers will go to evade detection.

Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry praised the diligent work of the CBP officers. “Our officers remain vigilant and are committed to utilizing all available tools and resources to prevent these harmful narcotics from reaching American streets,” Rodriguez stated. He emphasized the importance of such operations in protecting communities from the dangers associated with drug trafficking.

The seizure not only underscores the effectiveness of CBP’s enforcement strategies but also highlights the ongoing battle against the illicit drug trade at the border. The intercepted cocaine will be subjected to further analysis, and the case will likely lead to a criminal investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the trafficking attempt.

As drug trafficking remains a significant concern along the U.S.-Mexico border, CBP continues to enhance its operational capabilities and interagency collaborations to thwart illegal activities. Through rigorous inspections and proactive measures, the agency aims to ensure the safety and security of the American public.
