Dominican Republic – The National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), in collaboration with the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESAC), has apprehended a Albanian national at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA).
The arrest was executed during standard security protocols at the airport. During the routine check, the suspect’s luggage passed through an X-ray scanner, which revealed suspicious shapes within the suitcase. The X-ray images displayed irregular patterns and densities that did not match common items like clothes or personal belongings. Upon closer inspection by DNCD officers, these anomalies were confirmed to be 40 individual packages of cocaine.
The use of such technology has become crucial in identifying narcotics that are increasingly being smuggled in sophisticated manners. This technology allows security personnel to see through luggage and identify anomalies that might indicate the presence of illegal substances.
The case is currently under investigation by the Public Ministry, with the seized cocaine being sent for forensic analysis to determine its exact purity. The foreigner will face legal proceedings in accordance with Dominican law concerning drug trafficking and possession.
