In a significant operation, the Guardia Civil in the province of Badajoz has successfully seized 100,000 xtc and methamphetamine pills, weighing a total of 40 kilograms. These drugs were cleverly concealed within music speakers shipped from the Netherlands, highlighting the innovative methods used by traffickers to transport illegal substances.
Details of Operation ‘Zanger’
The operation, dubbed ‘Zanger,’ was detailed in a press conference held on Thursday by Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Delgado, head of the Guardia Civil Command in Badajoz, along with José Luis Quintana, the government delegate in Extremadura. The investigation began when agents intercepted 24 kilograms of drugs hidden inside loudspeakers destined for a residence in Mérida.
Upon further investigation, law enforcement conducted a search of the house, resulting in the discovery of an additional eight kilograms of drugs. The operation did not stop there; another shipment of eight kilograms was intercepted soon after, following the same method of concealment.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigations
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with this operation. They were reportedly awaiting the delivery of the packages. Both suspects have prior criminal records, prompting the authorities to consider the possibility of their involvement in additional criminal activities.
Lieutenant Colonel Delgado shared that the initial detection of the drugs was made possible through specialized X-ray scanning techniques. A trained narcotics detection dog confirmed the presence of drugs within the loudspeakers, each containing approximately one kilogram of narcotics.
Broader Implications
The Guardia Civil is currently investigating the intended distribution network for these drugs, which may extend beyond Extremadura. Given the backgrounds of the arrested individuals, there are concerns about broader trafficking operations both within Spain and potentially across international borders.
Quintana emphasized the importance of this operation, praising the coordination among various police units involved. Such collaborative efforts are crucial in combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety.
