1.5 Tons of Cocaine Seized in Pacific Waters

In a daring operation on the Pacific waters off Colombia’s coast, the Colombian Navy intercepted a staggering 1.5 tons of cocaine bound for Central America. The bust, which also involved the rescue and subsequent detention of three individuals, marks another milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking.

The dramatic scene unfolded near the Valle del Cauca department, as a Rapid Reaction Unit spotted a suspicious vessel in distress, according to Captain Andrés Henao, interim commander of the Tumaco Coast Guard Station. “When we arrived at the scene, our personnel found three people in the water, along with 49 packages of varying shapes and sizes and several fuel canisters,” Henao reported.

The vessel, which had apparently capsized, left its crew floundering until the Navy arrived. All three individuals were safely brought aboard before being handed over to authorities, along with the massive haul of cocaine.

A Growing Fight Against a Growing Problem

This operation is just one example of Colombia’s relentless efforts to curb drug trafficking. So far this year, the Navy has seized over 266 tons of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean alone. It’s part of a broader trend: cocaine seizures have skyrocketed from 659 tons in 2022 to an estimated 794 tons in 2024, according to the Ministry of Defense.

But these efforts are playing out against a backdrop of surging drug production. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recently revealed that Colombia’s cocaine production jumped by a staggering 53% in 2023, reaching a record 2,600 tons. Coca cultivation has also expanded, covering over 253,000 hectares—an all-time high.

This exponential growth in production highlights the evolving challenges Colombian authorities face in dismantling a complex and deeply entrenched narcotics network.

From Rescue to Justice

For now, the three detainees remain under investigation, while the confiscated cocaine is set to be destroyed following established protocols.

This operation underscores the high stakes and constant vigilance required in the fight against drug trafficking—a battle with implications that stretch far beyond Colombia’s borders, affecting countries along the trafficking routes and at the drugs’ final destinations.

As the Navy continues to ramp up its efforts, each successful operation serves as a reminder of both the progress being made and the immense challenges that lie ahead.
